Each month we will be featuring
one instructor. Listing their qualifications, favorites, etc…
This month’s instructor is Judi Bunge. Judi is very
active in just about every aspect of animal care & training. She has been an obedience instructor for 14
years and an assistant agility instructor for 8 years. She takes a personal interest in her students
and is very interested in their progress, and willing to give the one-on-one
help that so many of us need.
She has been a licensed vet tech for 20 years,
and enjoys all aspects of her job, but is partial to the surgical
rotations. Judi is involved in many
rescue groups, including Glenhighland Farms Border
Collie Rescue, Mastiffs Unlimited of WNY, & Greyhound Rescue Adoption Team which
she has been president of for the past 5 years.
Judi
& her husband, Andy owns multiple dogs, cats, and parrots. Her home is opened to orphaned puppies, which
she hand raises for the city of
Believe it or not, with all her jobs, pets and
responsibilities, Judi has time for a few personal hobbies like walking,
gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting and painting.
She remembers her first dog, Whiskey, a
husky/shep mix.
She never did formal obedience with him but he was a great dog who
excelled at parlor tricks. Her first
competition dog was Roger, an Amstaff who earned his
CD in obedience and was on his way to CDX.
They also earned open agility titles together. Her current competition dogs are Haylee and Pickles, working on their MACH and CATCH
titles. Rukus
is her up and coming Staffordshire Bull terrier who
is just making his debut in CPE agility and hoping to compete in AKC agility
and obedience.
To watch Judi run in agility you would
think she has been doing it all her life, but she remembers her first time in
the agility ring with Roger, her Amstaff at the Nia.
Dog Of The Month
This Month’s dog is Lance McDermott, a handsome 1 year old
golden retriever. His teacher tells us
that he was voted “Most Improved” in his beginner class and his family is
continuing on with his classes into novice.
Lance’s father is a search and rescue dog and being the high drive dog
that he is, Lance is looking forward to being able to learn agility. His best friends are his neighbor’s dogs who
he plays with regularly. He also loves
his kong and to chase after balls. He loves to chew on bones, his dad says there
isn’t anything he can’t destroy.
Congratulations Lance, your bandana and gift certificate will be in the
mail.

Catches
Congratulations
to Becky Buehrig & Annie, Ellen Schoop & Willow, Sherri Capp
& Mica, Diane Krauss & Abby, Lori Grove & Niles, & (for her 2nd
catch of the weekend) Lori Grove & Robin
A Catch is an agility title that we all
crave but few attain. In order for a
handler and dog team to advance through the agility levels they must earn qualifying
runs or “Q’s”. To do this the team must complete each course within the time
limit and without making too many mistakes.
As the levels advance the mistakes you can make are less and less. There
are standard courses and 6 games that the team must earn Q’s in. Level 1 teams must earn a total of 2
standard Q’s & 6 games Q’s, one in each game. Level 2 must earn 3 standard Q’s &
12 games Q’s, 2 in each game. Level 3
must earn 4 standard Q’s & 12 games Q’s. Level 4 must earn 5
standard Q’s & 12 games Q’s. Level 5 must earn 10 standard Q’s and
24 games Q’s, 4 in each game. For a
grand total of 90 qualifying runs!
